Description

[AFRICAN AMERICANA]. Early post-bellum CDV of a female African American domestic worker standing in a garden behind a seated white gentleman. Richmond, VA: C. R. Rees & Bro, [1866].

CDV on cardstock mount with Rees & Bro imprint on recto and verso. Verso also bears affixed 2-cent revenue stamp with Richmond, 1866 cancel stamp partly visible.

This fascinating and artistic composition is set in what is likely the side garden of a plantation home, with portions of a porch stair railing and picket fencing visible in the background. The foliage of a large tree covers the top third of the image while flowering bushes cover the lower third, framing the seated gentleman, likely the owner of the home, and his female house servant standing at attention. The man holds a straw hat on his knee with one hand and looks off-camera. The woman tilts her head slightly downward, but faces the same direction.
